TITLE: FIVE PIECES

A COLLECTION OF WRITING SET IN A COLD YORKSHIRE PRIVATE BOYS' SCHOOL RUN BY MONKS

Ampleforth College is the school. 'Saturday Afternoon in Helmsley' contains an encounter between boys from the school and kids from the town. 'Tea and First Class of the Afternoon' takes two boys into the dormitory to smoke an illicit cigarette during a free period. 'Fragments of James Hall's Saturday' is a stream of consciousness, as is 'Cmdr. Davy's Maths Class.' 'The lads at Large' is the shortest piece: a group of boys hang around making mischief as they wait for evening prayers, in the same way that a group of inner-city youths probably would.
